Let me start off saying I owned a Superbird and are now working on my friends Daytona. So we where thinking was the other day where the Superbird's a real Chrysler factory produced car? Looking for some insight. From what I understand the Daytona's where made at a Chrysler factory? Than shipped to the dealer's. But the Superbird's left the factory as a RR with a Superbird VIN? Shipped to an outside vendor that Chrysler didn't own? The vendor made all the parts? and assembled all the conversion parts to make it a Superbird. The metal, glass, vinyl top, headliner ect. Did the vendor ship the car to the dealer's or back to Chrysler? So could you say that the Birds where a Factory built car? Just wondering

I believe that factory produced yes, although I could be wrong. The 2 masters above would be able to tell you more. I believe they were because they had to make 1,000 or so street driven models to have it compete in Nascar with Richard Petty behind the wheel

Assembled at Lynch Road factory then on to Clairpointe 5 miles away for the aerodynamic Superbird components. This was not uncommon as the cars would clog up the production line. BO29 Barracuda and LO23 Dart went to Hurst after going down the line.

How cool would it have been to build and see these cars being built as new as such an odd/different looking vehicle and knowing it was the street versions of a NASCAR race car.
I have always wondered how many Jimmy Joe Bob's went into the southern dealerships to purchase a Daytona or Bird street version with the intention to take it home and convert it to race car to try his ability at racing? Is there any known street versions that became a famous race car? Or, were they all race team specific purpose built race cars from basic body in white type builds?

The Daytona Chargers were converted to wingcar configuration at Creative Industries. The Superbirds were converted by Chrysler at Clairpointe with parts made by Creative Industries. These pictures show the Daytona Chargers being converted at Creative Industries.

But the bodies had the modified rear window on the factory line?

...and the Darts with the wheel well mods?

So where were the body mods done?

Body mods? I think they were stock bodies except for the nose, wing and fender scoops.

Body Mods? Probably done at Petty's shop for his cars.

They had "aerodynamic" rear windows in modified C pillars.

Someone had to do that sheet metal work or new panels were stamped.

The Darts had severely cut out rear wheel wells.
