If you want it as simple as possible, you can literally get rid of all the vacuum lines except for the vacuum advance, brake booster, and heater/a/c system. None of the other crap is necessary. I have a '73 318, thats what I did... Hope that helps.

Upon a little research, I see why it could be actually a bad thing to have the high volume pump. I did a little googling, and I guess the problem that can be run into, from what I read, is that the oil pump will drain the pan faster than gravity can return the oil, causing burned out bearings...
Any V-belt of the right length should be fine, and that said...
If you feel the ones you have are a little loose, and theres no more room left to tighten them up, just look at the numbers on them, look up that part number or have the auto parts store do it, and get a belt thats 1" shorter...
That was my thought exactly, that perhaps the oil pump seized and caused the shaft to break. Okay, I'll go ahead and replace the pump and the shaft. Should I go with the high volume pump, since I'm replacing it anyway?

Well. Time for an update on this thread... I finally was able to troubleshoot, I pulled the intermediate shaft and sure as shot, it's sheared. SO, here's my next questions....is there any way to get the sheared portion out without dropping the oil pan and pulling the pump? My magnet tool...
