The replacement tank was well packaged and matched the original tank very well. Installation went smoothly and everything fit and measured correctly. It has been installed now for over 5 years with no issues and the filler hose I posted about has also been leak free. I don't drive this much...
Hello All,
I've reached a point I need some additional experience diagnosing why my motor will not idle well and requires more base timing. Looking for a trusted mechanic that knows these old cars. I have a 67 charger with what appears to be a stock 440 motor. Much appreciated.
My understanding is mechanical fuel pumps create pressure spikes and pulsations, so liquid filled gauges are preferred to dampen those signals when installed on a motor. There are also the vibrations of the motor itself when a gauge is connected to it...such as being ported off a fuel line...But...
Thank you all for contributing here.
Yes, Then and Now can modify a mechanical fuel pump (the type you disassemble like the Carter M6903 not the cripped body style like the stock replacement Carter M3672) and as you can see from the video they can also restore and improve the shortcomings of...
Thanks for the suggestion, I'm aware of that solution but I'd like to avoid the added project of fuel line modifications, adapters etc. It also adds one more part that can fail. There seems no shortage of poor quality auto parts, and that includes the regulators.
It just seems odd that pumps...
Yes, there is this post:
Mechanical Fuel Pump 101
And the business 'Then And Now' publishes a good video on rebuilding the Carter M6903 here:
..but hopefully there is a new pump out there by a different manufactures that meets the 4-5 PSI needed by the edelbrock / carter carburetors so...
Unfortunately all that's available in my area is 10% ethenol pump gas -- I'd like to avoid plumbing in a regulator if possible to avoid one more potential failure point in the fuel system however if there are no pumps out there that can deliver the lower pressure I will resort to that.
Does anyone recommend a mechanical pump from a brand / sources other than Carter that reliably delivers the lower 4-4.5 PSI ?
My 67 Charger is stock (see info. below) and it has never really run well. I've been chasing fuel problems and have replaced everything from the tank to the carburetor...
Thanks for that description. Always impressed when I see progress photos of fully stripped down car built up from bare metal.
After all the comments I got the welder and will start practicing on some scrap metal incase I dont find a good solution hiring it out but I’ll keep this thread updated...

Thanks for posting those photos. Looks like you used metal from a donor car right? Was that due to availability or preference? Curious how well repair panels metal fit.
Your repair also looks like it might have been tricky to cut and fit given it included the transmission tunnel...
@Big bill, thank you that I didn’t know mailbox fills p but I deleted the few messages I had so hopefully it’s clear now. Please let me know if doesn’t work
@Big bill, thank you I didn’t know my mailbox would fill but I deleted the messages I had there so hopefully it’s clear now. Please let me know if doesn’t work
@Rebelrouser very good points that even limited repairs can snowball. I’ve looked into the adhesive idea and while perfectly legit knowing myself If I start cutting and buying panels i’ll probably just buy a welder and try to weld it correctly and then i’m back to doing the work I really don’t...
@eldubb440: Thats great looking preparation snd nice work. Also thanks for posting those photos it’s very helpful to see the floor layout.
My floor rust seems to be forward of the cross member but It’s clear I need to pull the carpet to better assess it.
If this is something you would take on...
Thanks that's encouraging, always good to get perspective. I'll have the car on a lift soon and will take some better photos. There is through-rust in the floor pans and in the quarter panels and wheel arches. I'd like to patch them in simply to keep the water out and put some miles on the car...
