I notice that this 'joint' where the plastic pins are is part way along the main shaft of the steering column. Is the joint in the upper half of the column? Are specialty tools required to remove and reinstall the bearings and if you are going to recreate the plastic pins would it be advisable...

Thanks for your response. I did not drop the column on the floor however I was using a deadblow hammer to try and set the connector further onto the steering box / gear box. I will check. Ps. no plastic on the floor either.
