It's too much timing/detonation that kills a nitrous engine, not running lean. When you start out with an outdated fat/lazy N/F tune and then optimize the timing to that rich tune, you will then have too much timing if something goes wrong and the fuel system can't keep up.
Start off with a...
At the time, I had an obsession with seeing how far I could push those cheap rebuilder hypers. I was putting $800/set Stock Eliminator ring packages on $95/set pistons :)

I had a cheap diagnostic vacuum gauge velcro'd to the dash, it referenced crankcase vacuum via a fitting screwed into the engine's fuel pump blockoff plate. Crankcase had no vents, so loss of vacuum pulled thru the pcv valve orifice was generally an indication of either new crankcase air leaks...
I doubt you would have much trouble with stock-ish ring gaps as long as you didn't give it too much timing. Overly rich nitrous tunes want more timing for best power, problem with rich is that you will then get into trouble with too much timing if for some reason the fuel system doesn't keep up...
Here's a pic of the crossbar plate that I currently use on the more proper version of the low compression engine, it's set up similar to the Powershot plate mentioned above with bored/ported direct mounted solenoids...

Stock small body solenoid only flows about 175hp? I bored the solenoid orifice to .078" which added about 20% more area, so 220+ with the porting. Didn't try more as I was afraid the solenoid might have trouble with a warm bottle. The solenoids were mounted directly to the Powershot plate with a...
I say embrace the low compression you have and use it to your advantage!
Back in 2012 I had a stock block 355 sbc with hyper .055" in the hole "rebuilder" pistons. With .093" quench and 251/261/114lsa solid roller, it only cranked about 100psi on the starter! To wake it up, I bought a used...
Back in the 70's when I was a kid, we used to make fun of the flathead guys that were stuck in the past. Fast forward to 2025, now i'm the stuck in the past guy with my sbc's!
Here's actual rotating weight data collected from my personal 2525lb driver/car. Sbc power, but exact same...
If I didn't want to bend to shorten, I would cut it in half, chuck the pieces in my lathe, and turn them down just before the bends with pilots to accept a piece of tubing of the appropriate thickness. Basically use the original bends and just replace the straight solid center with a shorter...
For a target of 11.50's on a 5k budget with what you have, i'd keep your engine as-is.
...gear the car for 115mph stripe @ whatever rpm limit works with your engine
...steel bellhousing, steel flywheel, Powergrip clutch, 'tamer
...ign box w/ rev limiter/2-step/retard
...caltracs
...remove...
I recommend starting with your 700hp capable street extreme clutch, which needs to be tamed for your application. Fix that, you will be able to hook the car consistently without breaking parts or bogging the engine. That will also give you the ability to launch on drag radials consistently, no...
