FYI, each year '69, '70 & '71 all have different 6 Pak carbs, as I recall.

Tony the 915 heads do they also have the cast L in the head

Underside of head right next to casting number

Tony if u have a moment look at eBay 371841008341
Has a very good pictures of L head casting

Exhaust valve size
ill check these on monday, but i dont believe that what is what the "L" means.

i do know that the heads i have are the small exhaust valve 1.60", which was just machining done to the head after it was cast to make it the 1.74" size. the way how to tell if they were small or large valve from the factory is that the large exh valve heads were stamped with "HP" on the flat surface on the front or rear of the head, depending which bank of the motor the head was installed on.
that makes alot more sense because the valve size was a machining job done after the heads were cast and reflects how they were machined/assembled.
just like a 440 HP compared to a 440 block, its the same casting, but was assembled differently. Sames as 64 426 (non hemi) blocks, some were machined/assembled to be max wedge assemblies, and others were just machined/assembled as 4bbl street wedges engines, even though they shared the same casting. in cases like i mentioned the identifier are the hand stamps, not in the casting

FYI I sold a set of heads that were non HP and had the 1.60 exhaust valves with L stamped by the casting number.. From what I have learned the HP heads had a K stamped by the casting number. Have also seen no letter . There have been some people that claim the L stamping is for HP heads. I have never seen that. I do know that all HP heads had HP stamped on the end of the head.

For clarification, the " L " is cast, not stamped like the " HP " is

Hi,
the small valves heads we had (they just sold) have the "L" cast into them and of course no HP stamped into them

So based on what Tony last post , the L is still a mystery and there is no definitive answer.
1.74 with the HP stamp is the true high performance 440 calling card.

No if they are stamped L they have the small exhaust valves.

I sold a set of 915 heads that had the same stampings as tony's (no K or L), but no HP markings to my knowledge. the exhaust valve measured 1.74"; it was either upgraded after or came that way from the factory. nice iron heads either way.
