I've got a quick question on roof rail seals. I originally posted this over on FABO, but didn't get much for responses.

I just picked up some Metro brand "Super Soft" roof rail seals at the nationals. I put them in and am having some issues. The roof rail seals have an outer flap that hangs down. I'm wondering if the door and quarter glass is supposed to sit over or under that flap. I'm trying to confirm how the window is supposed to sit in the seal.

When I close the door with the window up, the glass hits the seal and sits on top of that flap. This pushes the door glass out a little and creates a gap between it and the quarter window. When the quarter window rolls up, it wants to go under that flap, but the seal is so soft that it catches and crushes it. With a little help, by pulling out the flap, the window sits nicely under that flap.

On the doors, I guess I thought the glass was supposed to pop under that flap when you close the door, but as I said above, it hits it and sits to the outside of it. I would think it would leak easier that way. In hopes that they would take a set, I closed the door with the window down a bit and then slowly rolled it up and helped the seal get on the outside of the glass, as shown in the attached pictures.

Hoping someone can confirm that the glass is supposed to sit under the flap, as shown in the pictures, and if so, is there another brand, like maybe Steele Rubber Products, that might have a firmer seal that pops over the window better.

Opinions?? Experiences??

You sure these seals are on the correct sides, passenger/driver. This looks so wrong to me.

Yep, I'm with these guys above. In my b-body, the window sits up against the seal, not inside/behind it. Hope this helps

I don't think they would go in the other way. There is a larger flange on one side that sits into the inner channel of the roof rail, the other side is smaller and barely fits into the outer channel of the roof rail.

Not to mention, there is a formed point that sits where the A Pillar meets the roof (Top of vent window frame contacts it). In order for that formed point to go into that angle where the A pillar meets the roof, the seal would be facing the wrong way if it was on the wrong side. In other words, the part that is supposed to seat into the roof rail channel would be facing outwards, and the seal the window is supposed to contact would be in towards the car. I looked at the old ones that were in there and I'm pretty sure they were installed in the same direction. I will take a look and see though.

Found this other thread with a guy having the same issues and questions as I. It appears he has installed the same as mine. Maybe his pictures will show what I am talking about better. Guess my main question is if window is supposed to sit under to against the seal,... like he asks in his thread.

Mark,
If you were to lay the original out beside the reproduction, does the unique molded ends match up between the original and the reproduction? I know that the 71 to 74 B-Body application has an issue with the molded end that falls off into the quarter panel area, but have not heard of an issue with the 67 to 69 Cuda Fastback pieces. But then again, some guys will never let us know of an issue.
Thanks,
Richard

I have the same seals on the same car and my windows go over the flap, but I also had to make major adjustments to the window track itself to get the proper fit. There are like a half dozen bolts inside the door to adjust it.

I've had issues with the Metros on A, B and E bodies.
Soft Seal brand fit much better. Just talking roof rails. The other Metros fit fine.

I had the same issue. They can only go on one side, it would be pretty hard to switch them and install. With your windows rolled up take a windshield spoon or something plastic and push the flat in over the glass. Let the car sit lit that at it will 'train' the gasket. That's the only thing I could figure out to do. I installed mine a couple weeks ago now and ran into the same thing. Mine were Metro as well.

If they in-train themselves I'll end up trying another brand.

My doors took a while to settle in too. Had to to really slam them once the door gaskets were first installed but the next day they operated as expected.

I had a unpleasant experience with Metro. All in all, I had to order, receive, attempt to install, call them, send back, etc. What a headache

I've had good results with soff-seal. Currently I need new roof rail seals for my '68 and they told me they're 6-8 weeks out...
