I agree with the poster that said you handle the wood
4-5 times at a min.,
BUT; in many cases something associated with doing it
like me it's 8-9-10 {13 things} times, in the long haul
1) drive to then hike in & cut up or fall the tree
{unless you have it on your own property, still have to go to it & cut it up}
2) limb it/buck it & cut the rounds,
small enough to move or fit your wood stove
3) move/drag the rounds to the truck/trailer
{because you can never get close enough to skip the step}
4) load the truck/trailer, drive home
5) empty the truck/trailer
{I usually just load the splitter right from the trailer/truck, try to skip a step when possible}
6) get the maul out or the splitter, set it up
{gas/electric or hydraulic if you're lucky enough to own or rent one}
7) load the splitter
8) pick up the split wood & stack it
{8a) if your unlucky & have to deliver it to an elderly relative, 8b clean up afterwards}
9) go out & load it in a bag or your arms & finally bring it in to burn
10) clean out the ashes, from the fireplace or woodstove
11) clean the chimney/flews
Up here almost everyone burns wood,
it's not fun, it's a pain in the ***,
in many cases, unless you have someone else do it for you
or pay for more expensive gas/electric to heat your house etc.
it's a necessary PITA, 10 cords of wood a season for me,
but mores so it was mostly all for my elderly relatives...
I don't burn much wood, I have an extremely efficient heater
& my dad has asthma & he always complains about it
effecting his breathing...
God I hate anything to do with firewood
I read something more people die/injured,
up here from shoveling snow & firewood "related stuff",
than anything else...
