As I have been gathering parts for the restoration on my '70 GTX I checked on the condition of the die cast "PLYMOUTH" letters that go on the tail panel of the car, they are not in real good shape, so I decided to start looking for NOS replacements. As I've been looking I see that some of the letters are blacked out on the inside, leaving a chrome outline of the letter with a black inside, and some of them are just chrome with no blackout detail. The part numbers for mine are 2528974 - 2528981, each letter has a different part number. I've seen both the blackout versions and the all chrome versions using the same part numbers, so I'm thinking to myself, what gives? At first I though that some people were painting the insides of the letters because they thought it looked better that way, but I see that even the NOS ones are the same, some blacked out some not. So, I figure I'd start looking at pictures of '70 GTX tail panels, but I can't really find any pictures that are good enough quality to show me the letter details. So, does anyone have any insight on why the different letters? What applications? Which years used which? I think the letters on the '70 GTX are supposed to be the all chrome versions but I don't know that to be absolute fact, any input?

I bought my 70 Superbird from the original owner. The letters on the rear tail panel had the black out recessed areas. I put them back the same, only new. Can you tell how the ones you removed were done? That black paint on them in the day dissapeared quite easily.

I don't see any signs of black on my originals but it could have worn off, I don't know. The black disappearing during the day I think is the reason I can't really tell from pictures if the letters are blacked out or not, because of light and reflections.

Black inside.. I picked up a spare set just before the 50th anniversary aero meet and they're the same.

Maybe these will expand enough.

I don't have a real great monitor, they still look all chrome on my monitor, but it sounds like black detail letters are correct.

You can see the black in the PLYMOUTH letters on top of my old car cover.

Yes I can, it looks like it's faded out of some of the letters from age.

Mine are black, i repainted them when I Restored the car because the black was about 50% gone, the car was untouched and original paint when I bought it in 1979.

Thanks for the responses everybody. You guys have some beautiful cars. Jim Coronette, survivor, that's killer.
