Under illuminated magnifier lens, I'm seeing numerous random, small inclusion void hole "pits" in my New cast iron flat tappet faces... The un-named (but name brand $$ ) cam tech claims it's Normal machined-ground finished Cast Iron nature & useful oil lube micro-reservoirs, enabling successfull cam-Tappet break-in process....I do see these micro pits on good, well broke-in flat tappets but this just looks undesirable wonky & a failure source point...Any experienced thoughts welcomed.....tom.

I thought you were going with the tool steel lifters?

Cast iron by it's very make-up will always shows signs of pitting under a microscope....the degree will vary according to the care taken during the casting and machining processes.

Are we talking craters, or pits?

That freakin' icon of yours, I swear....

Unless said pits are large enough to cause a weakness, they should be fine. Oil lube micro reservoirs? That's what I would tell you if I were selling them too, but it doesn't mean it's true.

I would be more worried about the shape of the contact face. Check them all for a slight dome shape and make sure they aren't dead flat.

Upon re-inspecting, not the cast iron pores, but more like after manufacturing, unprotected, general mishandling "ding" hit gash & scars much larger & deeper than the finishing grinding stone swirlie marks..I can't get a good focused pix yet..

Anyone know if the $20.00 each, Mellings # 299374 Individually packaged Mopar solid flat tappet arrives better protected & un-scarred ??
