I have a 1970 440. The oil sending unit will not line up to be installed. There are two holes on the rear of the block. The unit usually goes in the hole that is on the drivers side. There are ridges on the block that will keep the oil sending from lining up to be installed. I am using the oil sending for the gauge. What is the problem. The oil sending unit is too long. What is the solution?

Solution is to use a smaller sender. I assume you are using one of the larger round can style ones. You can get a small threaded piece of pipe and a coupler to extend it out or just buy a smaller sender.

Extend like this. This one has the smaller style on the driver side and they extended the passenger side for the larger one.

This one has 3 lol but you just need the one unless you are doing an aftermarket gauge.

Or use the smaller type like this.

Thanks. I have never seen this problem on other blocks. I am using the large bell shaped Sending Unit because of the gauge on the rally dash.

I too have used the large one with no issue. Several engines 440/2 -383's no issue with the larger ones.

Last pic is for the light.

I had the same problem with new after market sending units. So I measured a new one and compared it to an original and it is a larger diameter. The fix is to file/ grind the ridge till it lines up. I really fought the thought of grinding the ridge until I saw a picture of Nick's garage hemi and noticed he also had to grind the ridge.
