Hello newbie here. I have a chance to buy a rough 68 charger. Ive been trying to buy it for years and I haven't been able to see it in 5 years.
It was originally a slant 6 car with auto on the column with bucket seats. It was switched to a v8 k member and has a 318 in it now.
Hasnt run in 20 years. Hole in the roof, but I haven't seen how bad the floors are but Im guessing trashed. I know trunk floor is trashed.
All that said. Its a 68 charger. Probably one of the coolest and best body shapes ever.
The owner asked me to make him an offer. I told him I'd get back to him soon.
Whats a realistic value on a total project?
The only pic I have of it right now.
Thanks for your input.

68-70 Chargers are worth what someone is willing to pay and what the seller wants. You can throw out any price guide that rates by condition. I can usually buy a Mopar for less than most of the guides say, but a Charger no way. The seller is usually looking at Mecum and Barrett Jackson prices and doesn't have any idea of how much it takes to restore them to that level. More pictures would make guessing easier, but it would still be just that. A good relationship with the seller is your best hope of getting a deal.

without seeing it, a titled 68 complete is 5-9k at the drop of a hat. more if salvagable.
the six cylinder title is irrelevant.
good luck!

Value guides and sold auctions are probably your best bet.

What would you want to do with it?
For me it would only be worth it if i'd put a huge hemi in it...

Check the frame rails and lower corners of the back window too. Are you able to replace body panels and weld?

Hard to guesstimate what’s its worth with one picture though.

Need more pictures, but based on what's been described i wouldn't even bother with it. There are better cars for the money than something that doesn't have floors in it. Why people can't bother to throw a tarp over there derelict project car is beyond me...

Thanks for the input. I was hoping to be in the under 5k range. I can weld and wrench but not sure about hanging full quarters with inner and outer wheel housings and doing a full floor with frame repairs.
I do need to go see it in person again to get an accurate idea of what it needs.
A triple black 68 440 4 speed is what I've always lusted over since seeing Bullet...
Thanks again to everyone

He wants an offer. It doesn't hurt to go there or less. You can go up but you have to have rea verbal skills to come down.

Check out this you tube build. I think he paid 3k for it. If it’s not in good nik, and you can do the work yourself, then the price depends on how badly you want one. Your dream car is worth what ever price you can negotiate it for, and that you can afford at the time. Whether that’s more or less than somebody else would pay is irrelevant. Even though you always see ‘em popping up on you tube shows and what not, they are becoming more scarce as well. If you can get it for a figure that you’re happy with, go for it.

Beauty is strictly in the eye of the beholder on the other side of that is convent emptor — (sorry if I misspelled it) buyer beware.. ask questions — no question is ridiculous ever! Everyone here is happy to help.. it’s what makes the hobby fun because it’s all about the treasure hunt and the end prize!
Good luck !

If she's to the point that frame rails are needed your looking at the harder replacement compared to quarters, wheel wells etc. cuz if you screw up the rail install your pretty much fubar and have to start over.. It can be done at home, but if you've never done it before you stand a good chance of making more work for yourself.
Price wise for that Charger... maybe in the 3 to 5 thousand range, more if the cancer isn't too bad but floors, trunk, quarters, valance, wheel wells, roof??... your looking at thousands of dollars in just replacement sheet metal. Good luck which ever way you go

Make sure to take cash with you. Cash always talks. Make your offer you are comfortable with and pull the cash out of your pocket to show him you are serious.

Under 5k would be a bargain. Look at ebay completed auctions, that car could be worth 10 even 15k easily.

Just be honest with the seller and buy with good intentions. The seller may not have the money or the ability to restore. Give him the full run down on what it will take.

Good luck. Hope you get what your after.

It would be cheaper to buy a done car usually. Unless you want the pride of doing your own work, which I’ve done and I get it, but by the time you’re at a Bullit-esque car you’re in for $60-100 grand and 4 years or so. Depends on all the work you can do. Even complete, you’ll likely need lots of trim pieces etc. I am all for saving cars! Just be sure you know what you’re getting into. $3-5,000 would probably be reasonable depending on completeness and structure.

My first question to a seller is " have YOU ever restored an old car" and if not "do you actually have any idea what you are looking at as to condition as to rust, body work, condition of drivetrain, etc??" Then I quiz as to exactually how they arrived at their price??? \
Most people buy projects having never restored anything.... they are many time buying a dream.... of which many times never comes true. just fact.
The old car hobby is a great hobby, people just need to be realistic as to their ability and $$ and tool and facility, and time frame, and what the job is in front of them.

Thanks for all the input.
The seller had a death close to him and now he has realized that he will not have the time to restore it. He also has a bunch of other cars and this one I have asked about a ton of times. I never jumped up and down and bugged him about it. I just told him many times, When You Are Ready... Call Me. And now he is ready.
I know more about A Body prices and what they are are going for these days. But it seems 68-70 chargers prices went crazy the last 2 years.
Again thanks for the input.
