**UPDATED : For those interested in the 'America's Cup' yacht racing

I have been a sailor all my life and raced on, pretty much, anything that floats from 1 man dinghies to offshore sleds. What has been going on for the past couple of cycles of the AC is getting too far away from "sailing". There is no more seamanship involved. The skill of the sailors to manage tacks, jibes, spinnaker sets and douses and true match racing tactics have all been removed. There is no doubt that these boat are absolutely amazing....doing 40+ knots is 10 knots of breeze is incredible and would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. However, now there is a skipper, tactician, and trimmer. The others on the boat are there just to provide the man power to pump up the hydraulics that operate all the systems.

There are a lot of rules nuances is sailing that make it difficult for the lay-person to follow, but here is what I miss most about watching AC races....the pre-start dueling:

The good old days when you virtually had a standing start followed by a tactical drag race.

I use to watch some back in the 90's
my business partner, Mark
had a pretty cool sailboat, sporty boat like a 28'-er, winged keel, IIRC
a huge spinnaker the size of the boat, he raced in the SF Bay regularly
& up the California coast (yes up the coast against the tides currents)

some of those guyz' were nucken' futts
you could lay them over almost touching the sail to the water
I got to steer/pilot every so often
I was great ballast (6'2" 250#) :poke:
the dogs (we both had labs) loved going for lil' trips too

I can't say I follow it anymore
but it is interesting for sure

Latest update - 12 mins ago:

American Magic are out of the race for the America's Cup, losing both matches to Luna Rossa in the Prada Cup semifinal this afternoon.

With four wins in the America's Cup Challenger Selection Series semifinals, Luna Rossa now advance to the Prada Cup final to take on Ineos Team UK.

In mid-range wind conditions, Luna Rossa cruised to victory with a 35-second win in the first race in Auckland today.

American Magic's campaign then came to an end when it was beset with mechanical issues with its foil arms in the second race and fell behind by more than three kilometres towards the end.

American Magic was unable to win a race during the Challenger Selection Series, while the Italians will meet Team UK in the best-of-13 finals series, starting 13 February.

Latest update - Match Point as of 20 mins ago - 6-3 to Team New Zealand. (Best of 13 races)

Luna Rossa are just a tiny bit slower in the winds, but they are fighting hard.

Less than 20 minutes till the next race of the day. :)

Watch live now if you like - race starts in less than 5 minutes...

...just got postponed by 15 minutes.....6:00pm deadline to start the second race.

Suspense is building....racing abandoned for today. The wind is too twitchy and would be unfair to both teams.
Back again tomorrow. :)

All on St Patrick's Day - which largely went unnoticed.

Congrats to the kiwis. Looking forward to what kind of boats the next cup cycle will bring!

Sounds like it might take 3 months of negotiations with the Team and our Govt to decide if it stays in NZ - or is an overseas hosting regatta. No-one really knows just now. Even the losing co-skipper Jimmy Spithall wants it to remain in NZ for the next regatta. He loves this country, and so do the Italians.

Now, if we can only get the Italians to start up a shop selling Cannoli's ....... :)

I cannot find a single shop that sells them here....if someone has a tried & true recipe...please send it on.

Congrats to the Kiwis
New Zealand should be extremely proud

how did the USA do ?
I really don't follow it, if at all really much anymore
I use to 'some' when my old buss. partner Mark was into sailing/racing
in the SF Bay or along the west coast,
he had a hot sailboat (Hunter 28' (?) IIRC),
really light/fiberglass, winged keel, big *** spinnaker etc.
had a small cabin sort of, more really storage area with 2 cots couple cabinets
that was back in the mid-late 80's early 90's
I was great ballast, hanging over the rails, but it's nothing like them boats

I assume they (USA) are NOT like in the Capt. Dennis Conners (?) days

Sadly Team USA (American Magic - NY Yacht Club) suffered from breakage in the semi-finals - launching out of the water broke the boat's back, and they never gained the competitive edge back after that.

:thankyou:

that sucked for them

Heaven's to Mergatroid, how long has this "race" been going on? Or is it a series, like best of 125? These guys must have full beards by now. Sorry, but this is like watching a crochet marathon on the Knitting Network......
:rofl::rofl::rofl:
Seriously, i did watch some of it. More exciting than most realize.
I'm still waiting for the great whites to make an appearance though.
Congratulations to the Kiwi's!!
