AMC Pacer X!

After reading the posts, the more you look at that first picture, the more it grows on you. Our family came very close to buying one in, I think 1974-75. Ended up going with 74' Maverick which .. .. . . . . . Marketing was interesting back then.

You could get a 304 V8 in the wagon version of these. https://www.schmitt.com/inventory/ds-1978-amc-pacer-dl-v8-wagon/
That year, 1978, was the first year that the 304 V8 was offered. By then it was too late to reverse slumping sales, which were actually very good in the first year.

A lot of people didn't know about the asymmetrical design; the passenger door was four inches longer than the driver door to allow easier entry to the back seat on that side.

I know, I just drew it up a few seconds before posting it. :) But I wish it would have...
Yeah, I didn't read the last sentence good enough.....

Yup, on the passenger door. Did you know the car was supposed to get the Wankel rotary engine? The engine wasn't ready in time and AMC was ready to introduce the car. Also the 'pods' on the hood were added because of the law for how high the headlights had to be weren't changed like they were supposed to be so AMC had to raise them or that car would have looked like the one in the pic that you posted.

...or the windows down means the owner doesn't leave any valuables inside and knows nothing inside the car is as expensive as the door glass.

The big question is….is it a 6 cyl, with A/C or a 401?
They put a 401 in them at a dealer down in Texas. They covered the rear 1/4 glass with fiberglass and had a portal window instead. I worked at AMC back then they were a sleeper until you heard the idle.

Stopped driving something 'old' daily in the early 2000's so, I don't know how different it is now, but, with various cars over the years previous, leaving windows open for 'just a moment' while I ran inside resulted with me coming back to a car with trash thrown inside or the occasional person rummaging around. These things didn't happen a lot, but enough.
And on a funny note, there was a time a CAT climbed in and made its self known as I was pulling out of the parking lot. I almost jumped out at 20 MPH when it grabbed my leg from under the seat.......
I'll take a chance with the windows.

Was there an option code for this?
.......
I remember that movie! Liked it....

Stopped driving my 66 Belvedere in 98 after 10 years of daily driving it and no one ever bothered it. Did you keep a lot of stuff in it that may have been an invitation to people who liked to rummage in other people's stuff? :D

Nope. What little I did carry, was out of sight.

Shoot, with my '71 Chrysler, I literally had someone just get in while I was stopped for a light. I was like WTF? "Do I look like a taxi?" "It's a big car, you've got room, just drop me off at....... , its no big deal"

Dayam, what part of SE Texas was that in!! Think I would have shot someone that did that lol Thing is, my doors are usually locked so maybe they would just jump in the bed of my pickup because that's what I drive all the time these days. If someone did that, they would get a hell of a ride though :D

Actually, it was Florida (I don't remember the exact town). I had gone out there for some work. Like all my rides, the AC didn't work, so I had my windows down. Doors were locked but they just reached in and unlocked it. This happened in broad daylight. For the rest of my time there, I only had the drivers window all the way down, the rest maybe an inch or two.

(EDIT: Didn't mean to hijack this thread........ )

On all my old cars when I'm out and about I leave my windows down and/or doors unlocked because of exactly this....I put a club on the steering wheel to deter a little though.

A few years back a guy near by had a 440 4 speed pacer project on CL, it was up for along time, same color and good condition, it needed to be wired and that was about it if I remember. That would have been a screamer.:steering:

Lots of years ago....and I mean lots, there was a member on Mopharts that had a 440 Pacer and it was pretty fast. Can't remember his user name though.
