TORQUE Specs seem too high for 8 3/4 Third Member & Axle Flange Nuts?!?

I swapped my 3:91 for a 3:55, the torque spec for the nuts is 45 ft. lbs. and 35 ft. lbs. for axles. I don't own a torque wrench so borrowed one (1/2 inch drive) from Auto Zone. I "bench tested" the torque feel in my workbench vise and 45 ft lbs. seem WAY TOO MuCH and think I can hand tighten by feel safer and sufficientlt - don't want to snap a stud! Thoughts?

That does seem a little tight. The bolt torque depends on the size of the bolt as well as the grade I don't think those housing studs are harder than grade 5. I have seen misprints on bolt torque in some of the manuals.

If you are using fresh nuts the extra 10 ft-lbs was probably spec'd for the extra drag the pinched steel deep nut has vs the axle nuts at 35 ft-lbs that aren't lock nuts.
 
I've never snapped one and I've done a fair number of swaps. Had to zoom in, but yep wrench set at 45 ft-lbs...

I also treat my torque wrench with respect, seeing I bolt propellors on with it.

You know how many hillbilly's just rattle them down with an impact, same as lug nuts I have never seen a broken stud on the center section either.
