parallel parking is a lost art.......

I work in a downtown area where having to parallel park is a must. Oh the idiots I see jamming up the roads daily!
 
It's part of the driving test for a Pennsylvania Drivers License. (But not back when I got mine - horse and buggy weren't that maneuverable in tight spaces.)

Although check out this fool who parked behind me recently in a half empty carpark. They didn't hit my car and there was no damage but it was close.

I assume it's still a requirement here, but who knows? ..............I taught both my wife's kids, and both the neighbor kids how to park; and took them to take the test (15 years ago +/-)....... 4 for 4; I bet none of them have done it since...... not well, anyway

saw a commercial for a self parking car, nothing new I suppose........ I assume future generations will have zero physical skills
 
as I sit here drinking my coffee, it also occurred to me that I no longer see car companies pushing "hands free" driving in any commercials
 
I rode with my brother in law to a family function. He set the car on cruise control and kept saying don't worry the car will brake when it gets close, look I don't even have my feet near the pedals. It did work, but not something I would ever do.
 
I grew up in Brooklyn, and today I'll parallel park, on ONE manuever, within inches of the curb. It's an art you never lose.
 
What's amazing to me is now with all the car cameras, people still screw it up!
I'm reminded of this commercial from years back (not specifically about parallel parking, but you get the idea..)

 
When I took my driving test to get my license at 14, Dad said I could use his car......a 1961 Cadillac convertible!!! That thing was as close to a "land boat" as you could get!!!

First thing the instructor told me to do after leaving the license office was to parallel park in a spot right on the main street of our little town.

I nailed it on the first try!

Driving instructor looked at me kinda wierd, then made a couple of checkmarks on his clipboard....then told me to go back to the courthouse....driving test was done.

I walked out of the courthouse 15 minutes later with my license
 
I took my driving test in dads 1964 Buick LeSabre back in the dinosaur days.
That thing was a big tank, but was so easy to see out the back corners of that car when backing up.
Had to parallel park that yacht on my drivers test, and did it with flying colors.
Went inside, got the drivers license.

Tried a couple years ago, still nailed it, just like when I was 16. Made me feel good.
 
I took my driving test in a '59 Ford pickup. Instructor asked me, are you sure you want to use this? No power steering just a big steering wheel, three on the tree. Got it on the first try.

People today would have to put their cell phone down to attempt to parallel park. :rolleyes:
 
It's an art so lost that I only do it when there is no traffic. Otherwise a car is bound to stop on your back bumper and sit there with a confused look on their face.
