**1970 Dodge Charger STUDENT build!!! matching numbers! (teacher posting)**

I agree with the others. If this was a survivor car in good shape i would definitely keep the original 318.
But since this car needs a full restoration i would also upgrade the engine.

I would put in a 426 Hemi or a Hellcat Crate Engine if it had to be modern.
This would make it a 6 figure car once done.
 
Regardless of which direction is chosen on the car direction, provided there is no Bowtie crossbreeding, it's going to be an outstanding learning experience for the students. There will be no end to teaching topics.
 
I just want to congratulate you on teaching these students to work with their hands, damn I miss auto shop, metal shop, and wood shop.

Nobody cares about a base model XH29 318 car being numbers matching, most would prefer a big block. And if that 318 needs rebuilt, you would be much better off putting the money into a 440/727.
 
I think building a 440 or a stroker 400 for that car would bring more interest and money for the auction than rebuilding the stock 318.
 
Friend of mine ran a HS auto shop and did exacty same thing, taught students how to tear cars down to show them the different aspects of it, and then rebuild them to sell to finance the car for next year. And if car was too far gone like the 67 Coronet he had, he'd part it out. I got quite a few boxes of stuff that that were bagged and tagged school year ended, everything from a wiper motor to the nuts that hold the speaker or speaker grill in place.

My suggestion is to build what you have. The learning experience of rebuilding an engine will be the same with a 318 as it would for a 440, same for the transmission. The difference is that your budget doesn't take a hit for the drivetrain swap.
The other consideration is the fundraising with the raffle. If it's a fixed number of tickets that are sold, the less that's spent on the build the more that goes back into the program.
A small block with some mild upgrades would probably have broader appeal than a fire-breathing stroker 440 too. It's fun to cruise around in a car that looks great and gets good gas mileage on regular.

I agree. Leave it stock. Provide learning at lowest cost. Let the raffle winner make the changes he wants. He's going to do that anyway, particularly if you leave the paint in primer.

I would just keep the 318/904, but do some performance enhancements. I see the car already has dual exhaust.

Swap out the rear gears to a 3.x:1 ratio.

Upgrade the brakes to power discs.

Add Digi-Tails
1969-70 Charger | DIGI-TAILS

Add an aftermarket air conditioning maybe.

Add a tic-toc-tac.

Use different outside door mirrors, not the square ones in your earlier pics.

Use stock/reproduction chrome exhaust tips.

Do you have the fender tag and broadcast sheet? Was the car originally red with a black vinyl top? Interior color? Which front seats?

the fender tag says dark orange FK5 318 A904 a/c and more. Thought we had broadcast sheet but no luck. it belonged to another car. black interior and front bench seat.

we Just gave away last years with a 2018 392 HEMI stuffed in a barracuda! with TKX 5 speed!

Please contact @Dodge Don as he might have paperwork on your '70 Charger or he might know who has the '70 Charger that matches the broadcast sheet you found.
 
Maybe just let the kids decide, take a vote. It's their project right? It could make things more interesting.
