Shutting down a garage......not easy!

I've been selling off stuff and finding more that makes me sad that I'm doing this but don't want my wife to have to deal with it all. It's bad enough for me....! Just hope I can get rid of most of it before I go.
 
Something I need to start doing. I don't want to leave it all for my kids to deal with. This spring will be the place to start. Swap meet, here we come with a whole pick up load full. That will be a good start.

My kids don't give a rip about what's left unless it's money.....
 
That's a tuff problem for sure. What's more of a problem is shutting down two buissinses. Selling off the equipment was fairy easy other than the items that were still being deprecated on taxes. Tax ID's just about never go away, not to mention things tied to your SS#. Personal buildings that are tied to business assets because they were used in the buissinses and built on your personal property means major tax problems if you don’t keep some business going. Paperwork nightmare to say the least. At least I had sense enough to not involve my cars and parts in either of the buissinses.
As to your problem, I'm afraid I'm finding it hard to let go of a lot of things, but I know much has to go. I'm starting with things that I know I will never use. For instance things I removed from cars when I started restorations and were not worthy of being reinstalled. I'm hoping that selling things will encourage me to move on to selling more and bigger and better things.

I think many of us are at that point in our lives. I am trying to get rid of stuff I really don't use or don't need, but it is hard. I used to be a SCUBA diving instructor. I have lots of top end equipment (at least it used to be), but I really don't dive any more. It is time for that stuff to go but it is hard to admit I won't be diving much any more. There is lots more stuff too, but I need to keep at it. I don't want my kids to be stuck with that task, as discussed on another thread.
 
I'm in the same boat. What's difficult for me is I have a son and my wife has a son and a daughter. The boys (both 40 yr old)love old cars, daughter (46) could care less.
I can give the '68 Dart to one and the '65 Belvedere to the other. I'm sure the wife's cars would end up with the daughter.
But what about a shop full of tools? Lots of tools!
Have an auction and split it three ways?
 
I tried getting rid of a bunch of stuff. No one wanted to pay anything for it and I don't have any kids.

So, I started giving it away to a select few of my friend's kids that are into the hobby.

I redid my will to leave all of my Snap On tools and boxes to a currently 34-year-old who will care for them like I have.

There are 3 cars I would like to finish, one I've yet to buy, and I can call it a lifetime.

I would think 90% of us here are in that category. My son and grandkid are not into cars at all. And it wasn't that I didn't try. I'm breathing down on 80 years old and have two 360's that I had planned on putting in a 74 Duster. But time is going by so fast, it seems like all I do is dream about it and it is the next day with nothing accomplished. So when I see my maker, I envision the dumpster in the driveway and all the goodies I accumulated being deposited in it. The good thing is the cars I have are running now. 71 Cuda, 74 Duster and 2010 SRT Challenger.

Well I am truly Blessed.

Two sons and two Grandson all racing with me and turning
on win lights!

A pair of three year twins that help the best they can at the
shop and track. They sit in the cars = dream and talk about when
it is their turn to race.

We I guess for me looking at 80 is not so Bad.


God is so very good to me!

seriously though, I am 66 and starting to have some of these headaches
 
I dealt with this about 10 years ago. Didnt want my wife dealing with it, I kept all my tools though as my son can always use them. I had 2 semi truck loads of Mopar stuff. Got tired of dealing with flippers and wannabies, so a lot of great stuff got scrapped. I still have some stuff left and I might sell some of it but more likely what my friends dont want will get scrapped as well. When you get older you just dont want to deal with peoples BS.
 
Facebook market place it and put it cheap so it goes... i have stopped throwing stuff away (for now) cause i know someone will need it eventually, i just keep em listed..

P.S. thanks for cleaning it all up.. my dad left me a full house and bout 20 tons of steel **** in a barn to clean out.. was not fun
 
My lord....I was having such a good morning until I found this depressing thread. Now it's got me thinking about all the "good stuff" I've collected over the years and what the hell I'm going to do with it later on. Thanks guys! lol
