440 start-up with flat hydraulic lifters

The last one that I used VR-1 for break in went flat within 10 minutes. I have done two since then, (one being the rebuild of the one that went flat), with the Lucas Break in oil and both broke in without a problem. Cheap, and easy insurance. I use VR-1 in all of my flat tappet engines, after...

440 start-up with flat hydraulic lifters

Use break in oil. I have been using the Lucas 20w 50. It has the highest amount of zinc. Take your time and make sure that everything is ready and go for it. Get the timing close and have the timing light hooked up for adjustment when you start it up.

Flat tappet lifters, wear patterns, cam lobe taper and other things. Let's swap opinions and ideas.

I lost my first one recently in a small block chevy. It was just a mild rv cam and it flattened 14 of the 16 lobes within 10 minutes of break in on the break in stand. It was an enginetech brand and lifters too. The vendor told me that it was because I used Valvoline VR1 oil for break in. I tore...

    Pulling 440 WITH headers?

I am going to say no you can't pull the motor or refresh it with the headers on. Yeah it sucks getting starter and headers in. It can require a hammer and die grinder, at the least.

Hemi 4 speed and A-833 difference.

Bearing retainer size might be bigger on the 18 spline. You cant put a big retainer one on a small or medium bell housing, but you can put a smaller one on a bigger hole bell housing with and adapter ring. Obviously the clutch disc will have to be changed to 18 spline. R413 covered it all, but...

    383 low oil pressure

Great idea rickseeman. Just to add to that. with a HV oil pump, it should try to twist the drill out of your hand, and make the drill strain.

"B" engine large thrust main bearings

What is the difference between "large" & "small" thrust bearings? When I rebuilt my 440 I just ordered bearings. That was many years ago. Thanks

Used lifters on a used cam

Check the lifters to make sure they are crowned and run them. If any are flat or cupped, get new lifters and use old cam.

440 engine rear down. Anything worth keeping?

I have a '72 HP block that all of that would fit right into. Hopefully somebody nearer to you can use it. That is some good stuff, mainly the crank, balancer and the windage tray, the cam may be a good one too. All that stuff is getting harder to find. To me there is nothing like original and...

440 engine rear down. Anything worth keeping?

Don't throw any of it away. If you don't want it, offer it up for sale at reasonable price, to somebody who needs it.

    Yet another 440 build

Cast crank is externally balanced, so you will have to have it balanced with the flywheel and correct harmonic balancer. I have heard they are good up to 500 HP.
