Trouble with Timing Chain install 383

I may be repeating what others have said, but... To find true piston TDC, you need something that randomly stops the piston near, but not at, TDC. Turn the engine just past TDC and install the piston stop. Now rotate the engine backwards until the piston (gently) hit the stop. Mark this point...

Trouble with Timing Chain install 383

I think that's a good move. At worst, the cam will degree perfectly and you will feel you wasted time to degree it. But, it is very possible you will find it is advanced or retarded. And then, with some adjustment. You can get your car running like it should!

Used lifters on a used cam

I assume this is NOT a roller cam. With a roller cam, it does not matter. A flat tappet cam has the lobes angled a little bit. In turn, the bottom of the lifter is dished. This makes the lifter constantly turn as the engine runs, which is needed. (By the way, this is why you need to pay special...

Trouble with Timing Chain install 383

I agree that degreeing a cam is important. Two examples: A 340 cam was 10 degrees advanced and a 440 cam was 4 degrees retarded. There are more errors than you might think, so cams that are "off" is more common than you may think. You engine is out and there are a number of good video tutorials...

I like the idea of buying a car that was painted at least several years ago. Why? Freshly painted cars can hold rust secrets that have just been covered up with shiny new paint, but can bubble through within a year or two. When you buy a car that was painted awhile ago, you are more likely to...

Trouble with Timing Chain install 383

I respectfully disagree with you. To repeat what others have said: When you line up the cam and crank "dot to dot", the engine is then at firing of #6 (TDC of #6). But you still want to install the cam that way. Installing it with both dots at 12:00 makes it much easier to have the timing off a...

Not directly related, there is a sticky thread for potential help in transporting a car. Transportation thread. Wanted/Available I don't recall that there is a specific thread for inspection help, but a number of times people have posted a car and asked if someone local is willing to go check it...

What was the coolest toy you had as a kid?

For me it was Lego. I made all kinds of stuff. I had a Lego train where the basic set looked like the picture below. Of course, I built all kinds of wild trains. One of my favorite things was to build a train and then smash it into things. For example, a Lego Truck crossing the tracks getting...

Welcome to FBBO! This is a great resource for information. If you are a first time rookie buyer, I highly suggest you bring someone knowledgeable with you to look at cars. Not only can they help you evaluate the car you are looking at, they can also be a "voice of reason" to make sure you don't...

    Rebuilding carburetors at home

Greg, you really don't need a straightedge. Just simply clamp the body in a vise and put a larger file to it. Just be sure you are not filing while pushing hard on the ends of the file (you don't want to bow it). The metering body will soon show you where it is flat and where it isn't. Just...

Vacuums - as in the "cleaning the carpets" kind - for cars?

Below is my setup. I have occasionally had a little bit of buildup where the hose necks down to a narrower hose, but nothing significant. This is simple, uses a tool I already have, has great sucking power and is very versatile too. Vacuum up anything you like, including water if that ever were...
