I come from the A body crowd where 7" wide wheels and 255-15's are all you can go without carving out the wheel openings. I buy this early B body and there's ton's of room for a wider rim and bigger tire.
I think mine are 15X7 standard offset Cragars with a 245/60 but it looks like a 10" wide and a bigger tire would fit without rubbing. I like a big tire on the rear.
Pics of the driveshaft? It is probably a ball and trunnion type joint with a rubber boot covering it. They work ok but not many techs are old enough to know how to rebuild them. Here is some information about converting it to a slip yoke. Any driveshaft/powertrain company should be able to come...
