The original R-12 system used different hoses with out barriers that the new ones have and used different oil and o-ring, seals. Different capacity and pressures.

If the mating surfaces are really flat than the problem has to be the plug to pan thread fit. If this s a pan that has seen a lot of oil changes than the pan threads may be worn. Solution is to either the pan or use an oversize threaded drain plug.
The pins will last longer than you will. Once and done.
Cars were made from steel and lasted if they didn't rust.
I doubt many of the "modern Cars" will be around 50 years from now, Bushings and all.
Our old cars were passed down generation to generation.
New cars are lucky to last through...
The largest poins that I have are 7/16" But they will only work on lower hinges that were not drilled off center by the factory. The laregest I normally use are .406 diameter.
Never us a bushing in the lowers. Steel pins only.
Don't worry, all noises from under the hood will end soon....Just kidding.
No way to figure out your problem really.
Here is a way to determine if it is a rod bearing. Disconnect the ignition wire on each cylinder while runnung one at a time. And then plug it back in.

Almost all current aftermarket wheels are made hub centric.
Hub rings are normarlly ordered at the time the wheels are ordered.
Not something that was available 50 years ago.
Were available when I finally left the business in 2008 .
