I had the same problem. Mike at Then and Now replaced the spring with a lighter one.

The antifreeze is rather hard on the rest of the components.
Pressurize the coolant system and see how fast it leaks down. Maybe pull the plugs and see if there's any "clean" ones. Maybe just a head gasket.
