Thank you everyone! Super helpful as usual. It ended up being that the brand new motor mount on the driver side (less than 1000 miles) had separated. The noise I was hearing was the header flange whacking the floor board. I’m going to be replacing with another mount that includes a modification...
Ding ding, we have a winner. The brand new mount separated. I’ve discovered another thread that has a modification suggestion to putting a couple nuts and bolts to help prevent separation; I’m going to try that.
Okay thanks for the input.
Hah, I’m working on it ;). It’s got a 318 with a 355 stroker kit from the previous owner (no other details) but it’s actually got a surprising amount of power, in my opinion.
Hi Eveyone - When taking off from a stop (904 Auto) with moderate to aggressive throttle, there is a loud clunk that I can also seem to feel through the throttle in my foot. I have all new suspension, mounts, etc. What could be causing this? I’m not super familiar with the 904 and respective...
The manuals do say for the stock unit to touch and this does make sense given the pickup itself intentionally sets the screen about 1/4 above the true bottom of pan. I also read 3/8, so I left a little bit of room to make up the difference.
Finally, problem solved. The oil pickup tube was not only too high, (1.5 inch above the bottom of pan), the tube itself was angled such that the screen on the pickup was furthest from the oil in the pan—>This is also the reason the issue was only notable on right hand turns.
Thanks for...
When I run an inch higher, the problem does go away, but then I’m running potentially too much oil, no?
Can you comment more about not running the pickup touching the pan? The service manuals describe the necessity for the pickup to touch the bottom of the pan.
Updates for those who are interested:
- I checked the rocker arms for play and proper lash—> Everything is good. No movement on valve stems, no loose arms, all lifters were pumped up, oil equally everywhere.
I went back to the beginning of the symptoms:
1. Only happens when turning right for...
Well, after all the work that I did, I’m now suspicious that the passenger rear side lifters are not getting enough oil somehow. If a brand new set of lifters has the same issue (suspected same cylinder lifter not pumping up) then it has to be the oil flow to that lifter….I’m going to remove the...
Alright, I took all of the advice and got to work. What I immediately found was that the exhaust valve lifter on cylinder 8 was not holding pressure. With joy, I believed this to be the problem. As such, I performed the following:
1. New set of lifters for all cylinders. The lifters and cam both...
Thank you. I’m planning to open it up including removing the intake manifold to see what’s going on and inspect the cam. One way or another, something is wrong. I’ll post back once I have a look. Thanks for the input!
I have an auto stethoscope and could not hear any noticeable difference down the valve covers; sounds more like from center of the engine. Maybe points toward cam lob on its way out, but wouldn’t that be there all the time? This noise goes away intermittently.
Hello! I have been trying to diagnose this noise before embarking on removing the lifters. Link to Video open to all recommendations or ideas before I start pulling lifters/ deeper disassembly. This is my first old school engine, so take it easy on me.
Symptoms:
1. First time I noticed this...
