When I had overheating issues on my ’63 Ply, after some motor performance upgrades, I installed a 7 blade fan and OEM shroud. Researching shrouds, found that some of the after-market, just might create more of an issue with cooling – air flow. As such, I decided to locate an OEM for my car...
I'm running 50/50 mix with 2 bottles of waterwetter. Straight 30w VR1, w/ a bottle of lucas oil stabilizer and a shot of comp cams zinc additive. Thinking on going to Joe Gibb's Driven 10w30 next go round. I only heat my shop when I'm out there so probably leave the 50/50 alone. Only non...
PROBABLY.....the distilling process would leave behind those dissolved solids. The reverse osmosis process yields DEIONIZED water free of all imputities.
The specific heat of Ethylene glycol is: Specific Heat - cp- 0.5815 BTU/lb-°F
The specific heat of Propylene Glycol Solution Specific...
...at all. Factory fans always see to work pretty well.
I am assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that you went to the mechanical fan in an attempt to cool it more? Sounds like you were in the ball park with the electric fans.
Have you tried some waterwetter? Might give that a try and see if it...
...in the antifreeze the better. Water displaces heat better than antifreeze. Living where you do it may not be an option.
Kool it and WaterWetter does help.
Non ethanol gas helps.
When you top off the cooling system do not place the cap on the radiator until you see coolant circulating...
...Racing formula is more for track use, so no antifreeze. This stuff isn't inexpensive so I curious what someone who has actually used it thinks about it. The engine builder recommended distilled water and Redline WaterWetter which I am currently using but it is not helping with the heating issue.
you should be fine as is
do run a high flow (plate behind the fins on impeller ) pump and good radiator
run a standard high flow stat and not 160 degrees- that does not help
run red line waterwetter- that helps
or the high buck coolant
...EMP thermostat.
Added flowkooler pump.
Added lower Radiator hose internal spring.
Added 14 1” holes with flappers to shroud.
Tried waterwetter with distilled water.
Used foam to seal radiator to rad support.
And nothing. Maybe 2 degree drop on highway. Idle to 25 mph- 195 degrees...
...than 1/3 of the fan showing out of the shroud.
The less antifreeze you can get by with the better. Water displaces heat better than antifreeze.
Distilled water only. WaterWetter or Kool It does help.
Ethanol gas runs hotter than non ethanol.
Not enough timing will make an engine run hot.
...over the years many vehicles come from the factory with one row rad cores. Barely enough to keep up with a 4 banger.
Add 4 cylinders and a.c. and you are in trouble.
And if your cooling system is maxed out adding things like WaterWetter won't help. The rad can't remove more heat than it is able.
Measure the inside diameter of your shroud. A factory shroud for a 26" radiator is about 21" diameter, at least my '67 factory one is. More than 1" between fan tips and shroud reduces fan efficiency. If yours is 17" fan and 21" opening, you are not going to cool properly at idle. A 6 blade 17"...
Have you tried "Water Wetter" or Lucas super coolant ,it is suppose to help with cavitation. Also make sure antifreeze is no more than 50 percent of mix.
Make sure you anti-freeze is in good shape and throw some WaterWetter in it and don't look back. If you haven't had an issue with it don't worry. The rise in temp after shut down is normal (as stated by R413). Longer drives are better at keeping it under control anyway. If it makes...
As I stated in original post, "reverse rotation" factory 7 blade does not go reverse rotation. Also stated "non flex" direct mount. I do like the idea of a thin piece of sheet metal to space it out just enough.
No place did I say standard rotation fan.
It is reverse rotation, so a stock 7 blade fan will not work. Unless I want to throw away a couple thousand in accessories, mounts, and buy new accessories and source all new stock mounts. The Derale fan is a rigid fan, not flex. But apparently it does not pull enough air at idle.
P.T. Barnum had several applicable phrase about gullibility (fill in the blank)...... the high performance formula lowers temp by "up to" 25°....how much and by what method engine, conditions? The Racing Formula says it can lower cylinder head temperatures by 100° F. Measured where and how...
