I would be concerned that the early (72) manual trans 400 may have originally had a 383 forged crankshaft and was internally balanced. Since you don’t have original crank or damper and don’t want to tear it down again, you probably should have machine shop check it out.
After trying some 245 55 15s on the back I decided I didn’t care for the smaller diameter thin sidewall look on this wagon. So I ended up putting a set of 225 70 15s on all four corners, they are close to the same height as the original 8.25 14s and nearly as wide as the existing 235 60s. Anyway...
Just a foam gasket on the retainer plate.
Beware some rear disc brake conversions require you to replace the axle bearings with non adjustable “green” bearings.
If it were me I would consult and source everything from Drdiff , that way you know everything will work together with no issues.
if by small outlet hole you mean that hole in your first picture below the thermostat, that’s the bypass hole on a big block. It does the job the bypass hose does on other engines that have them. That hole would have minimal effect on coolant flow when the thermostat is open
I have 15 x 7 cop car wheels with P235 60 tires. I like the look but the rears are a bit of a pita sneaking them between fender and brake drum. Thinking about going with P215 65 tires next time. Just wondering what others are running?
