i have a lot of parts, but only one power steering shaft to use and i see one of the nylon plugs is missing, column has not collapsed shaft does not move, is that one nylon plug safe to use in build? thanks
they came with nylon pins,if they are sheared off that means your column has collapsed,if nylon not broken then column is good.not sure about measurements though.

All 68-70 B body steering column shafts are the same length. The 1970 piece needed to be modified the accept the split pin for...
I can't help you with the length for a 72.
1) Was the car together with the same column and coupler in the car when you got it?
2) If yes, is it possible you may have pried back on the shaft when removing the coupler from the steering box before you unbolted the column from the dash. If so that...
ok I might be in the wrong place (general) but I gotta still ask..
Story...
Putting the column back in my 69 charger tonight..
When install coupler on firm feel new stage 2 box, it doesn't go down all the way on the shaft. It's about 3/8" too short to get to the roll pin spot. It the wants to...
The first pic was hard to tell the position...So that is correct.....
Have you taken off the centering plate at the firewall. The grab the steering wheel and pull towards you to get it in a better position? Just make sure the coupler has the pin in it.......
Sounds to me like the shaft...
Just a follow up to what I found.. The column had been collapsed by about an inch or so. Took some vise grips and attached near the undo of the shaft and somewhat gently tapped the vise grips. I continued until I got the column back to length. Put it right back in car and it fit like a glove...
Here's a pick of the column in the coupler as far as it can go and still not even close to being the
Correct length from the gauge hole (13/16") to top of coupler. My estimation it's about 3/4" too short! Collapsed maybe somewhere?
I'm not an expert on this, especially the early/mid 60's Mopars, but I did convert my 70 from manual to power, so hopefully some of what I learned applies here. Some of this most people know, but I will repeat it anyway.
1. Manual steering shafts are longer than power steering shafts.
2. Other...
It just keeps the steering shaft from driving into your chest in a head on, but from inside the car the steering wheel will not collapsed like Stanton said
I have started on rebuilding my steering column and ran into an issue removing the upper bearing. It was seized on pretty good and in my haste to get this thing off, I banged the shaft on my shop floor and collapsed the shaft. What are my options to fix this? Do I drill out the holes and try to...
I found the previous owner on Facebook. I never use the darn site but thought maybe if I used it like it might have been intended, I might get lucky. I found the name and location and sent the message. It was about 2 years later, he returned the msg. I guess he uses FB less than me. We spoke on...
I recently had the same issue. I replaced everything and still had the slop. Couldn't get the cover on. I had a chat with the po and he said the steering box was the issue for all the slop and he couldn't get it fixed right, even after 3 new boxes. As it all turned out, it wasn't the box the...
Cool man. Many years ago I took apart my '73 column shifter and it's not usable. The wreck I had in '95 collapsed the tunnel and things are all jacked up inside. The steering was stiff and clunky in '97.
I have a '74 floor shifter column (from a donor car I bought in '96 for the fenders...
...appears too far forward, if I pull the column aft to align these fasteners the column slides of the steering box. I'm thinking that I have a partially collapsedcolumn, however the column 'shafts' do not move independently. Can someone give me the overall dimension of the column?
Thanks Paul
It's been a while sense I posted. I final got my transmission issues worked out several months ago. I installed 8-3/4 rear end with 355 gears and locking diff along with disc breaks. I just finished replacing collapsed lifter. Edelbrock replaced it and gaskets under warranty even though it has...
Well, I've just been through this last year. These guys are all on the right track.
1. If your column's main shaft is "telescoping" OR has come apart into an "inner shaft" & an "outer shaft" then indeed the little nylon "collapsible shear pins" have broken. That's what happened to mine. To...
It sounds like your column's main shaft has collapsed and has the plastic sheer pins broken off. I just went through this 2 months ago. For mine, I disassembled the column completely and pulled the shaft out to the correct length. I did this by drilling out the visible part of the plastic...
Should all line up if the column is not collapsed. Are the nylon telltales (2) visible on the slip shaft? They are meant to shear off in an accident to allow the column to collapse.
Thanks guys, I just completely disassembled my column looks like the nylon pieces are still in the outer shaft section but maybe broken so I'm guessing the shaft is slightly collapsed.
