I heard that a local dealer would use a bay at the end of the shop and curtain it off so no one but specific techs could see what was going on when an engine was about to be replaced. Kinda reminds me of the Vega days with their lawn mower engines....

As others have said, basic engine mechanics should be applied. Start with a vacuum guage. If its reasonable move to fuel. How big is the fuel line from your tank. If its 5/16 thats your issue. If it has a small kink, thats an issue. Is the fuel tank clean and the pickup sock clean? As mentioned...
I was there too at a GMC dealer. What a fiasco. We had around 2 dozen junk engines piled up behind the shop waiting for the parts rep to authorize them as warranty. (it was a audit thing) We took them to a local scrap yard and cashed in. That bought pizza and refreshments for our service meetings.

I remember that very well! My dad used to buy Chevy pickups for work but bought Chrysler cars since 51. The pickups did ok but seems like there were always something wrong however minor. Yup, GM gave the diesel engine a black eye for sure.
If you check the below link.. this video is about the "Blaster 2" coil, the use of the ballast resistor is mentioned about half way thru.. Use of it depends on the rest of the components of the ignition system. Different coils require specific resistances for the ballast, one value does is not...
Why???? perhaps it's because YOU don't understand how the system works either. Wirh regard to the UNNAMED person eluded to, perhaps, he would benefit the most for a complete understanding of how things function rather than the disconnected inaccurate ramblings normally presented.....

Not to bad really. Take the elct harness off, Ensure the IGN wires w 1 and 2 wires work, then 12VDC to the pos side of the coil and the ground lead from the dist to the neg side of the coil. Ballast resistor should be.5=-.6 warm.
