...has been the "banding straps" like pictured on Firm Feels set walking off of the stack. Hotchkis appears to use the heavy duty straps that are pinned to the stack. Surprisingly Hotchkis is cheaper and come with hangers and hardware.
Springs, Borgeson gearbox and universal joint are all ordered.
Theoretically a 71 Roadrunner with a firm feel/Borgeson 14:1 steering box, boxed lowers tubular uppers and poly bushings with bigger torsion bars and big sway bars front & rear vs a new M3? which owuld handle better?
It won't help much.. but i installed mine in november and finally drove it yesterday.. 40 minute drive and zero noise or issues and i love how it drives now. only complaint for me is the pump gets VERY hot.. 180 on a 65 degree day, will be adding a cooler for sure.
It’s the worm gear adjustment. When the steering box gets really old, you can tighten this locked screw a tiny bit. You’ll know when you have 100% new idler arm, pitman arm, inner/outer tie rod ends, good alignment…..and you STILL have slop in the steering wheel. Years in the future, when this...
I tried the "pump it down" article for the saginaw pump. The shim idea that richard ehrenberg put out. I had bought a new saginaw pump, new borgeson gearbox, cooler, the upgraded linkage, etc. All of that have been working just fine, but still feel like the over powered factory gear box. No...
When you received your new steering box, did you get the needed fittings for the lines? If not, thats another reason to contact Peter.
Swapping a Borgeson steering box in a 1970 Charger
Thanks for sharing. I have a borgeson on my 67 Belvedere just installed. About 100 miles so far, I’m with Kerndog this is an amazing upgrade. The flaming river box that was on before was sloppy and felt over boosted.
Thanks for the clarification - so I was wrong - if 1 shim is added it increases line pressure to the box, which the box likes, but has no impact on steering feel.
...in my shop to have three very different suspension set ups in very similar cars so decided to do a comparison test. A 1971 Plymouth Road Runner with a Magnum Force front suspension, a 1969 Plymouth GTX with all the Borgeson stuff done to it and a stock 440 Daytona. Hope you like the video!
I replaced my steering box with a new borgeson unit. Trying to install the pitman arm that was already on the car and it seemed to big. It wouldn’t turn when the steering shaft was turned. I figured my dad had put a different year steering box in and I needed the arm for the small sector shaft...
That car looks like my first one Silver with red interior, of course it was back on 1978 when I was a Kid. Sure wish I still had that one. What are the alignment specs that you use? I just rebuilt my front end and put the Borgeson steering box in it .Ill be taking it to get aligned soon.
Thanks
...wobbling all over the road :)
Steering Box recommendation: Right now, I am looking for just a replacement OEM. In the future, I will go Borgeson route - but have lots of other items on the list (front disc brake conversion kit, transmission work, etc) so would just like to have a box that...
A manual steering box might ... but I am pretty invested in keeping the Borgeson quick ratio power steering. Would really mess up my belt system, not needing a power steering pump.
If you like the feel, that makes sense.
I didn't have to cut anything in the 2 cars I swapped in a Borgeson. The hybrid coupler that Bergman includes in his kit makes the swap a direct bolt in.
...Shipping in conus only included. Cash, PP f&f, others possible, PM me. Near Cleveland OH.
Left to right....
Power to manual adapter -$120
Borgeson u joint from a B body big block complete steering kit (I used the Bergman)-$140
3"clamp, seal and retainer for factory size steering coupler...
Here's what I've got compared to the factory coupler -
And to the Borgeson coupler -
Borgeson developing surface rust after a few months of sitting indoors, with no weather exposure. Shame on Borgeson and Bergman. These parts are going on good collector cars, not Billy Bob's $200...
