I'll give the spacer idea a try but even still, that sheet is stuck to the springs, not merely pressed in by them. I've lifted the springs to try to ease them off the paper, which is practically parchment after all these years, and the sheet wants to tear. Someone in another thread suggested...

Don’t give up brother! I bought my 67 in 2015 and it’s been one thing after another for the last 10 years. Last year was the first year I finally felt worry-free driving it and this is year I finally finished my interior resto. Still have things to get fixed up but I drive it almost every day...
I'm running a 5.9 magnum for the last 4 years and I love it! They arent hard to convert to carb and will work with any LA ignition. you do need a conversion intake manifold but not much else.
