U are correct, connecting a 30 ohms resistor to emulate the sending unit is a great test
indicating everything from the tank forward except the sending unit is functioning correctly..

User advised the rheostat sweeps from 9 Ohms to 72 Ohms, so the rheostat itself is fine and working, not open..
I would suggest that he check the grounds and end connections of the rheostat/sending unit..

Another point about upgrading your headlights..
Be sure to double-check the depth of the chosen headlight...
Some are quite deep and then this now requires some metal work on the mounting bucket...

Be advised the wiper motor resistor is not just a plain fixed value power resistor..
It uses nichrome wire internally that increases resistance as it heats up as to protect the wiper motor from overcurrent.

Double check ur bulkhead connectors...
These tend to get oxidized making poor connections.
Pull apart, burnish the contacts, slightly crimp tighter the female connector, coat with dia-lectric grease and reassemble..

Also now @idle the alternator current output will be higher
so less or no light dimming @idle..

There are (3) similar bulbs that all can work, but I would recommend which one is chosen make sure all of the bulbs are the same #.
1. 158 is a 3.36 watt lamp
2. 168 is a 4.9 watt lamp
3. 194 is a 3.8 watt lamp
In closing the 168 would be slightly brighter.

But to gain 1-2 HP with just regapping the spark plugs seems meaninless to me...
Note the dyno tests themselves have certain tolerances greater than 1 or 2 HP, due to temperature,
humidity, barometric pressure and fuel octanes. Note when Chrysler published the HP...
If:
1. The ignition system is working well, not marginal
2. There are no misfires
