Yes the heads have oil passages front and back, but the back one is the only one used. So the front one plugs up. Then you put the head on wrong side and Bam! No oil to rockers.

Bringing this old thread back up, which clutch are you running? I have a 7 blade reproduction fan with the low profile clutch, and the blades hit the pulleys before the flange even contacts the water pump pulley.
