    Safety thing, having to be in neutral or park is normal as the starter relay is locked out in other shifter positions. You did not answer the question about other electrical things in the car when this happens. Do they still work ?

    Fuel tank sending unit.

    I tried to bend the one that was in the car. It does test ok outside the tank, if I hold it the opposite way it belongs in the tank, then the gauge will go to 3/4. I'm thinking it's just the wrong sending unit the guy before me put in.
