Interesting. In over 50+ years I've never heard a crackling/frying noise from a steering box.

No, it is as Bradfly posted. The noise is from the borgeson box and it is transmitting up through the steering column.

Did you run into any noise issues running up the column with that coupler?

Bergman's Borgeson swap kit doesn't require the steering shaft to be cut.

While you’re replacing the box, you should look at the Borgeson box.
