After cleaning everything up, the driver's side per h is thin on the end (Western NY salt in the 70s). Has anyone replaced one? Should I replace it? This end is the worst, the other end of this perch and the other side didn't have as much rust.

Ask him if he did anything at all different even wash the engine would mess up a weak ground.
Usually it is a poor ground or bulk head at firewall issue.

Ok... so I need to buy a new brake line flaring tool since the ine I had owned for 50 suddenly learned how to run away from home.
I had the standard sngle/double flare deal that was used since the days of the ark.
How do these new fangled hyd tools work? I'm not buying a SnapOn set like I did...

Others will know better than me, but a wire smoking is finding a short to ground. I would try disconnecting possible components one at a time and retry from there, starting with the alternator.
They were much more dependable 20 years ago than they are now. I have zero faith in them these days except in knowing their fees will go up again soon. Just when I think I have seen it all, up comes another unbelievable scenario.
