The box should not be half gray. They were not painted, bare "plastic" of some sort.

My 67 GTX semi survivor car is body color, but my 67 Coronet R/T survivor car is chassis black. Of the 4 67 Plymouth B bodies I have in this building, all are body color. The 66 Plymouth B bodies are all chassis black.

As @gkent pointed out you can wet sand in multiple steps to make the process somewhat faster and you will need to feather the edges. I know 3M makes a sand paper for this purpose but it is not cheap and you need at least 3 grits to get you to the polishing step. Polishing with Cerium Oxide is...
