Have you tried running a new piece of wire directly between the gauge and the sender unit?
It is possible that the blue wire is damaged and is shorting under the spare tyre or rubbing on the sill covers.....if you have the original loom in the car.
It's worth checking, as it will never cure...

In changing valve cover gaskets today, I found these two lovely pieces in the front lower portion of the passenger side cylinder head when I remove the valve cover. I cannot see any visible broken pieces so I am assuming they have come from somewhere else? I realize...
I'm looking into obtaining a 2 1/2" s shaped pipe used on a Ford truck that I'm hoping will raise the pipe up another 2 1/2" to just below the bumper. I'm kinda leaning toward my tips extending beyond the bumper about an inch and a half.
