Intermittent tick... might be a leaky exhaust manifold (gasket). had one on my 383 w/ stock exhaust manifolds. the ticking mostly went away after warming up. but also had a tappet go flat one time.

Arm rest bases and pads are available as repro's.

Have you tried running a new piece of wire directly between the gauge and the sender unit? It is possible that the blue wire is damaged and is shorting under the spare tyre or rubbing on the sill covers.....if you have the original loom in the car. It's worth checking, as it will never cure...
