I am not surprised the coil is 'hot'. Mounted on a hot engine is going to cook the 'coil' & reduce the spark output. A most stupid idea from many manufacturers. You will need to swap the coil to see if it has failed.
As to the BEST coil, need to know more about the type of dist.

I got the dual spring heads on a bored 383, less expensive than rebuilding the 915s I was going to use, lighter, iirc flow better.
I ran it with an RPM intake for a bit, no complaints.
when you use that tool, pay attention to the booster face surface. The H-shaped tool fits against the booster face recessed flat area. The tool won't sit correctly in any 'ol position, but against the recessed flat area it sits fine and allows an accurate measurement.
