I measured the nose part that you have circled in red. It measured the same size as the OE starter and the hole where it goes is round. Something is stopping me from installing it all the way and I can't see it. Problem is, I don't want to hack up one of these starters only to not have it fit...

Pull harder. Unless some fool glued it on, but they're just a friction fit.

It is not hard, it is being done everyday; it is a very simple device: a wire wound resistor with a wiper arm. You cannot get that wrong if installed correctly. This assumes the resistance is correct.
