Just ordered a new carb.. and going to order some trans stuff since i will have the car apart, new sprag and some upgrades...
ohh one quick thing.. which i didn't know.. early bodies use a smaller steering box bolt than 66+ so the box will have 1/2" holes.. the bolts are 7/16" (i think that was the sizes) i had to get some sleeves to take up the space, my steering box was moving back and forth a bit before i did that..
I tried all the tricks everyone said.... at the end of the day i ended up with a propane torch and putty knife, followed up with a angle grinder and knotted wire wheel... It's just one of those jobs that sucks but have to get through it
I went with this cooler... It's a little big but.. rather overkill than under, use copper/nickel line.. sooo nice to work with. Did bulkhead connectors through the lower support, tried to use as little rubber as possible (have like 3" of rubber total in the lines)

I went with FTI, they make great converters and the better part is they are amazing to deal with.. had some issues (ended up nothing to do with the converter) and they were extremely nice and professional to talk to and work it out.
