Don’t blame you there one bit. I’m the same way. Happy you found the issue before spending bunch of money for port work. Maybe this will cost you less in the long run. Get new heads that are pressure checked, ported, valve job, guide fit, and you may pick up the power you’re looking for.
My motor using Indy -1 heads, Indy 440-25 crossram, Indy valve covers, 440 Source distributor. I ground the intake, head, and the lip of the distributor cap. It has maybe .060" clearance. You can see here with the intake lid removed. The valve covers come off easily with no distributot removal...
