I once nailed the gas on some jerk that did that. Loud pipes probably scared the jerk more than seeing the front rise but only did that once after thinking about what would happen if my brakes had failed if the jerk hadn't stepped back.

In another car, I put the cooler along the frame rail below the battery tray. It's purpose is to shed heat so I'd think it would be most effective if it were in the path of moving air but anything helps.
