True story. I worked at an automotive machine shop, "Dennis" was dressing an engine, he broke off a bolt in the block and then broke off a tap in the block! Boss comes over says "I thought we agreed YOU SUCK AT THIS"! Boss goes and gets a diamond edge drill bit and drills out the tap, saves the day.
Not that long ago some high output marine 4 stroke engines had alarmingly small oil pans, it was to save weight, but they probably figured out that they needed more oil capacity for overall better performance. Today's engines have closer to 6 or more quarts, rather than the four, they used to have.
I am with the no odor crowd, both cars are 71s, we always run 91 no ethanol, I'm guessing because both have excellent vapor recovery systems for the time. I changed the tank in the 71, the evap hoses were shot!

I realize you stated you were not going to replace it. I agree with the others, it does not look bad. I have found in my 48 years of wrenching, often times you will be worse off changing things that are really better off being left alone. JMHO, John
I switched to solids on my flat tappet 383, I'll probably never ever go back to hyd. Almost no noise. My buddies cant even tell I'm running solids. They are lighter and easier for the spring to control, and contrary to popular belief, don't need constant adjustment.
