Even if you sandblast, I ALWAYS clean & grind with 120-240 disc till clean bare metal especially if Tig Welding. I use OSPHO for cleaning, made by Skybright here in Cleveland Oh.

Mike, Check and see if your fuel line routing is touching your engine/manifold in any place. It's best to have as much space around the fuel line and/or insulate the line.
