What Size Brakes Do I Have?

Drum and disc brake systems operate on different pressures so, yes, you will need the proper proportioning valve as well as a disc/drum master cylinder as the bore sizes are different as well and the disc brake port does not have a residual valve in it. If you use a drum/drum master cylinder...

What Size Brakes Do I Have?

I measured the drums on the junk '69 Road Runner rear in my shed and they were just that, worn out and closer to 10-1/2 than 10 but they definitely weren't 10" and were well under 11" I just went out in the garage and dug out and checked the box of brand new spare shoes for my GTX and they are...

    Lights Dim at Idle

AND, your ammeter is moving to the "charge" direction every time you switch on the lights. i.e. you've rendered the ammeter useless as an accurate charging monitor. Using the battery as a power source for the headlight relays is fine if you have an idiot light or a voltmeter charging monitor...

    Vibration on Highway at 60+

"However if I raise the RPMs in neutral in that speed range, it does vibrate." It ain't the drive-line. It's the engine that's causing the vibration. Time to balance the engine rotating assembly. My engine balancers (3 of the 4 I've used have passed away) all say the same thing. There's a...

    Vibration on Highway at 60+

The tail-shaft bearing seems like a logical place to look. So does engine balance. Was the engine precision balanced or simply put together with off-the-shelf parts?

    Removal of factory spray?

It does if you spray it over dirt because the dirt will encapsulate the moisture like a sponge. That's why Rusty Jones and similar after-thought undercoatings never worked and, sometimes, even promoted rusting because they were sprayed OVER dirt, not paint. If it is sprayed on over fresh paint...

    Electrical education?

I know the problem. I have to get out my penlight to distinguish some shades of brown and purple. I'm working on another whole-vehicle schematic for a how-to article on installing aftermarket harnesses utilizing GM style fuse boxes and direct-wired (not a myriad of plugs) harnesses...

    Electrical education?

When I worked for a company upfitting first responder vehicles, the "lead electrician" was a licensed electrician (commercial-residential) and because of that license he was designated the lead electrician. EVERY vehicle was wired like he was wiring a multi-room house. i.e. a bundle of wires...

    Electrical education?

It's been out of print for a number of years but you can still find it on the Internet. Written before engine management systems came into vogue. First edition 1989 Second edition (spelling errors corrected, chapters added) 1993 Follow-up edition covering wiring kit installations was never...

    Pump gas 440 advice

premium gas Lucas ethanol additive hardened exhaust valve seats (on any pre-'72 vintage cylinder heads) I've always run premium since I bought the GTX in '68. I put the hardened seats in when unleaded gas was mandated and the ethanol treatment when the fuel lines and fuel pump diaphragm started...

    Brake flaring tool question

It ain't cheap anymore. I just ordered a couple of carb rebuilding kits from the UK and the duty nearly doubled the cost of my order. Plus, I don't believe it's rated or anything harder than aluminum or copper.

    Left hand thread lugnuts

Can you say wobbly wheels? Better off using a press and supporting the flange AROUND the stud then gently pressing the stud out. Using a hammer will, most likely, bend the metal where the stud was pressed in UNLESS you use a tubular support on the back side whilst hammering the stud out.

    Brake flaring tool question

As has already been mentioned, this style sucks. It is nearly impossible to hold the tubing tight enough to flare it without the tubing sliding down. I still have a couple in my tool box(s) but I haven't used them in decades. Instead, I've been using a K-D 2190 flaring tool for years. It's...

Which Chrome polish do you guys Like/Use?

I started using thus stuff in the fifties to clean the chrome wheels on my Raleigh 3-speed bicycle. The orange tube at the top is the coarse cleaner. The blue tube in the middle is the fine polishing stuff. The pink tube on the bottom is the fine grade polish and wax combo. It even comes...

A833 4 speed second gear trouble

Or a wobbly first gear. Reverse is activated by a movable gear meshing simultaneously with the cluster and first gear to reverse the direction of the mainshaft. If the bushing in first gear is worn, the gear will wobble and make shifting into reverse a bit tough. Also, if the cluster gear...

A833 4 speed second gear trouble

Did you verify that the internal rings in the blocking rings weren't worn? Most people only look at the teeth as a wear indicator when, in fact, it's the grooves INSIDE the blocking ring that actually do all the work matching the gear speeds. All the teeth do is help align the speed-matched...

    Who wants brighter headlights?

Regardless of whether it's a kludge or not, the bulb has been moved back away from the reflector to place the filament where it would have been if a sealed beam halogen bulb was used.
