Lubrication of a plug is always a good idea, without it can be a rough install.
I would start with the filter replacement. Just remember to invert it 180 degrees south of the equator.
Great news! Now put an insulator under that Edelbrock carb to stop the heat soak issue. I believe it's # 9265, and comes with longer carb studs. Make sure the choke is operating properly, but I'll bet it's your hot start issue.
