Just a quick update. I have been working with Pertronix on the timing issue. Seems as if this issue is caused by the Ignitor Module inside the distributor. Marvin has been great to work with and is sending me the updated parts to fix it. Looking forward to getting this resolved.

Thanks guys! Good idea on borrowing the puller from OReillys. I think I have all of the gaskets as I got a full rebuild set, but will validate that it has the ones needed. Not sure if the "main seal" is included in that set, but will check. i have the car in for some exhaust and front end...

Thanks Mopar! I already have a torque wrench. I will have to see if I can find me a gear puller. The 1 1/4" is already on my list of stuff to get next trip to town... Have a great weekend!!

Checked timing again. It was still in the mid 30s at 700 rpm idle with vac advance disconnected, and did not change with more rpm. Took off cap, flicked the mech advance, all seemed ok, reassembled. Initial Timing now at 11*, and mech advance kicks in as spring size dictates taking it up to...

Well, I only say that since it was working before, but I did remove the dist cap when comtemplating one of the timing chain slop tests that was outlined. Maybe I pinched something when I put the cap back on... I will take a look at see what it is, and take a look to see if I can see the oiling...

Aeon - Not exactly sure what you mean by this. This is my first tinkering car, so don't know all the lingo and stuff. If you mean that the throttle cable and tranny kick down linkage with the 4bbl needs to move outboard further as compared to the 2bbl, then I understand that. I bought a 4bbl...

    '69 383 Setup Headache

Yes, that is not surprising. I knew with +100K miles, there were going to be many things that might be needed... ;-) I know I do not have the ability to rebuild the motor myself, so I have to assess whether it makes sense to do some of these things myself in a onesey-twosey fashion with the...

Awesome! Thanks for the info! I think I understand the acc pump better now with everyone's great info. As for the timing chain, I figure I will give it a go. Not like I have to be in a rush... what at about the metering rod springs...? Right now, the stock orange springs are in there...

Update for the evening. I tore down the carb and verified floats were 7/16" & 15/16". There were the brass floats and didn't seem to have any gas inside. There was some junk in the bowl, so cleaned it out really well and cleaned the jets with some good sprays of carb cleaner. According to the...

Yes, this was a new carb and a new fuel filter. I will try to yank it off this evening and see what I got going on inside. I think that the adjustments in the Edelbrock book says 7/16 down and 15/16 up... Hopefully those are still the right targets. My fuel pressure is just under 7psi, so is...

Yes, I am going to take the top of the carb off and check for debris and verify the adjustment of the floats. The docs say to set it for 7/16" using a drill bit. Dumb question, but I assume that it is OK to do this procedure with the carb on the car, or do I need to remove it...? Also, my...

Miller - Yes, when this person was telling me about how the carb adjustments worked, I just had to shake my head. And the bad part was that he works at an auto parts store, and was giving me this "advise" on how to setup the carb when I was getting the pressure gauge to check my fuel...

Yes, I think so... New Pertronix Distributor, new Pertronix coil, new Pertronix 8mm wires, new Champion RJ12YC plugs gapped at 0.040 (Stock is 0.035, but Pertronix Ignitor III recommends 0.005 over with the new coil), new fuel filter, fresh oil and filter, new PCV, new hoses throughout... Was...

    '69 383 Setup Headache

Well, went out to refire the motor and check things out. Pretty hard to start, but finally did. Fast idle was rough. Checked manifold vac and only had about 10-11" (down from 18-19" previously), and then it died about 15 seconds later. The only changes I had made from when it was running...

    '69 383 Setup Headache

I didn't think it did either, but figured I had missed something given what happened. The air cleaner is an Edelbrock too, so I would be surprised if it were interfering, but I guess I have seen crazier things than that...

    '69 383 Setup Headache

Yes, I was meaning the (2) idle mix screws and not the (1) idle speed screw, or at least that is what I think they are referred as... I was also told that one was adjusting air and one was adjusting fuel, which I don't believe is anywhere near accurate, but I let them go on... - - - Updated -...

This is a new 1806 carb, and I have done nothing beyond setting the choke and 2 idle screws. I need to do some research and read up on the proper settings and how to do it. I will say that this is probably the procedure I am most intimidated by. I am always amazed when I read various things...

    '69 383 Setup Headache

That is first on the list for tomorrow, need to get a pressure gauge... If I recall the Edelbrock 1806 specs correctly, fuel pressure should be no more than 6psi at idle, and more like 5.5psi. What else should I check around this...? I did install a new filter and lines from the pump to carb...

Ok, I must now say that everything that I thought I knew about vacuum advance is now out the window, and I admit that I don't know jack... So today, I installed the light springs into the Pertronix to advance the mech advance curve to kick in starting at 1k and all in by 2400-ish. Reset the...

Lewtot - What is the reason for using the timed port as opposed to full manifold for vac advance? I have read a bunch on that topic, and most articles seem to say that timed ports were the precursor to smog controls and trying to reduce NO emissions by retarding ignition and not getting a...
