Original brackets get installed upside down maybe? That might change the pinion angle, or one side did and the other didn’t making the rear end off level from side to side.
Try disconnecting your tach wire temporarily. I seem to remember reading that a tach has caused a no start before. If you had it hooked up to the positive to begin with maybe messed something up, but hopefully not.
You have confirmed the sending unit is not internally grounded to the block and the gauge works by grounding the wire. In order to make it read correctly the only thing I know of is adding a resistor in the wire. Or get the corresponding sending unit that is compatible with your gauge.
