It's in the turn signal ( brake light wiring goes through there ) switch; unfortunately the way the switch is assembled you do not have access to the contacts that are probably corroded. I have a '66 that does the exact same thing, loses one or the other brake light but comes back to life when...
I had somewhat of a similar issue with a Shelby Charger that ended up being a bad alternator. Something internal was causing it to overcharge....
Might be worth a try.
You're doing just what I'd do, I'm not a fan of MSD units; bummer on the wiring harness!
Sat. I'm taking a '66 300 for the show, low milage original beast. PM me before the weekend if you want to try to meet up there, or next week is fine as well.

O.K., 1st pic is from the fall of '83; buddy in the LRE right after it's 3rd deer kill, notice in left corner my new Shelby Charger.
2nd pic taken last Thurs.; the LRE's ( now mine ) first outing under it's own power since '84 when my bud pulled it apart, and right behind it my same Shelby...
I picked up a '71 Charger that came with an extra set of rust free fenders; any idea of what they should sell for? Already have an interested party, just not sure what they are worth.....
Thanks for any help!
